Clean Air Night 2026: Protecting Patients from Hidden Health Risks
Clean Air Night is on Thursday 22 January. This year’s campaign highlights the hidden health risks of wood burning. While wood-burning stoves and open fires may feel cozy and comforting in winter, they release harmful pollutants that impact everyone; especially those with lung or heart conditions.
Why It Matters
Wood burning is the most polluting way to heat a home, releasing fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that penetrates deep into the lungs and bloodstream. This increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, lung conditions, diabetes, and even dementia. For patients with asthma, COPD, or cardiovascular disease, exposure to wood smoke can trigger exacerbations and worsen long-term outcomes.
