World Asthma Day 7th May
World Asthma day is on Monday, 7 May this year and despite a 42% increase in the spend in respiratory medicines, hospital admissions related to respiratory disease have risen by 82% in the last 20 years.
Asthma mortality in England and Wales is the 3rd highest in Europe, and the 2nd highest for young people aged between 15-24 years. The avoidable mortality rate for cardiovascular disease has fallen by 58% in the last 20 years, but for respiratory disease this has only fallen by 14%.
In Kent and Medway from 2017 to 2019 the mortality rate for asthma was 2.20 per 100,000 patients. This equates to 42 avoidable deaths from asthma.
We encourage all Asthmatic patients to have an annual review with our practice nurse.
