World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW)

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) runs from 18 to 24 November, highlighting the urgent need to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR). General practice and community pharmacy teams are key in promoting responsible antibiotic use to ensure their effectiveness for the future.

Key Facts and Local Impact:

  • Antibiotic resistance is rising: Bacteria resistant to even the most potent antibiotics are becoming more common.
  • South East London Impact: Broad-spectrum antibiotic use has decreased by 5% in the past year, but overall antibiotic prescribing has increased by 2%.
  • A collaborative effort is essential: Overcoming antibiotic resistance requires coordinated action between healthcare providers, patients, policymakers, and the public.

How You Can Help:

  • Educate patients on using antibiotics responsibly.
  • Advocate for best practices in prescribing.
  • Act Now by making your Antibiotic Guardian pledge and supporting the fight against AMR. As part of this year’s campaign, we’re relaunching the Antibiotic Guardian Pledge video.
