World Hepatitis Day

World Hepatitis Day takes place on Monday, 28 July and is an opportunity to raise awareness about viral hepatitis to ignite efforts towards its elimination. The UK is on a bold path to eliminate hepatitis C by 2025 and hepatitis B by 2030.

With cutting-edge treatments and focused screening programmes, these ambitious goals are within our grasp, but they require an unwavering commitment from primary care. Primary care clinicians play a crucial role in the testing, diagnosis, and referral process for patients.

We encourage practices to actively review and test patients at increased risk, in line with NICE guidance. This includes individuals:

  • born in countries with intermediate or high prevalence of hepatitis B or C
  • with a history of injecting drug use
  • who may have been exposed through blood products, tattoos, or unprotected sex.



Together, we can help close the gap and eliminate viral hepatitis across our communities.
