Chronobiology: Living in Sync With Your Body’s Clock

A patient once told me:

“Doc, Some days I’m full of energy… and other days I crash. What gives?”

The answer is often chronobiology — the science of our body’s internal clocks.

In my last post, I shared how the TimeShifter app helps shift workers adapt to irregular hours.

But what if you aren’t working nights? Even on a regular schedule, chronobiology shows us that when you eat, sleep, and move can be just as important as what you do.

Every cell in your body runs on a clock. From your hormones to your heart rate, digestion to DNA repair — everything follows a rhythm. Aligning with those rhythms is one of the most underrated strategies for health, energy, and performance.

🔹 Why it matters:

• Disrupted rhythms (irregular sleep, late-night eating, missing daylight exposure) raise the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer.

• Medications often work differently depending on when they’re taken (chronopharmacology).

• Even your immune system’s strength ebbs and flows with the day.

🔹 What we’ve learned from chronobiology:

• Cortisol and alertness peak in the morning.

• Insulin sensitivity is highest earlier in the day.

• Melatonin rises in the evening to prepare the body for rest
